Taveuni is Fiji's third largest island, and is located in what is often called 'the Friendly North'. Taveuni is a long island with central high ridge, with rainforested slopes sloping down on each side to the ocean. The south-eastern coastline is rocky, has some spectacular waterfalls, and for the most part inaccessible except by boat. The north-western coastline is drier and has a few small beaches. The best beach is at Lavena, and there are a number of small good beaches each side of Matei (where the air strip is located). The offshore islands of Qamea, Laucala, & Matagi have some excellent beaches and there is a resort on each island.

Kioa Island - Kioa island was purchased by the Tuvaluan Government in 1948 to relocate some of its own Polynesian inhabitants. It therefore has its own unique Polynesian culture. There are about 400 inhabitants. Although self-governing, they operate under Fiji Law. The small ferry which crosses between Taveuni and Buca Bay (Vanua Levu) sometimes stops at Kioa island en route.
Rainbow Reef Resort - This beach is narrow, but stunning. Very private as mainly only accessible by guests at the resort located here, where there are only a few bures. The beach faces the east where guests may see the sun rise on each new day (the beach is just west of the International Dateline).
Waitatavi Bay - This beautiful crescent-shaped beach is privately owned, with a subdivision of around 14 residential lots. Each lot has access to the white sand beach and snorkelling on the reef.
Korolevu Island - This small island is situated in the Somosomo Strait that divides Taveuni and Vanua Levu. It is quite close Taveuni, and Garden Island Resort offers its guests trips across to enjoy the lovely beaches, of which there are three small private west-facing coves.
Prince Charles Beach - This beach is well-known in Fiji, and was given its name following a stopover by Prince Charles in 1970. He was in Fiji to hand over independence to Fiji, and travelled to Taveuni to relax following the formalities. The property is only about 5 minutes or so drive from the airstrip at Matei, and is easily accessed from the coastal road.
Maravu Beach - Soft white sand, this beach is operated by the nearby Maravu Plantation & Beach Resort. Big old vutu trees drop their pink and white flowers in the early morning hours and you can smell their perfume in the air. At one end of the beach, large well-rounded black volcanic rocks create a sculptural 'garden' in contrast to the whiteness of the sand. Excellent views across the Somosomo Strait, which shimmers in the sun all day, and reflects the sunset in the evening.
Matei Beaches - Around the very tip of Taveuni there are a few stretches of beach with a number of small tourist as well as private properties bordering the shoreline. Beautiful sunrise views, and stunning moonrises as you eat dinner. Soft golden sand.
Qamea Beach - Qamea has some beautiful white sand beaches, and the one at the upmarket Qamea Beach Club Resort has been enjoyed by guests for many years. Deep sand that slopes into the water. Great snorkelling right off the beach.
Nukubalavu Beach - A reasonably strenuous hike up and over the hill behind Qamea Beach Club Resort brings you to a quiet beach. The land is subdivided for private ownership, but most are not built on, so the beach is usually deserted.
Vatu Bay - This privately owned beach is available for sale for a resort development. Soft white sand.
Matangi Island - Matangi is an extinct volcano whose crater fell away on one side and formed the picturesque Horseshoe Bay. The half-moon beach at its head is one of the finest in Fiji - accessible only to guests of the well-known Matangi Island Resort or passing yachts.
Laucala Island - This large, private island (4.7 square miles) is surrounded by beautiful white, sandy beaches with crystal clear waters protected by coral reefs. It was purchased by Malcolm Forbes in the early seventies, and is the location for the Fiji Forbes Laucala Resort.
Lavena Beach - Arguably the best beach in Taveuni, this lovely white strip of beach is located at the end of the coastal road from Matei. It was used as a film location for the Hollywood movie 'Return to the Blue Lagoon'. Behind the beach there is a shaded rainforest walk to the Wainabau waterfalls ... accessed by swimming up a river into a stunning 'amphitheatre'.
Taveuni Palms - Enjoy the intimate setting of Taveuni Palms, nestled among the palm trees along a splendid, secluded white sandy beach.
